Our Aberdeen Angus beef cattle spend the summer months grazing on lush green grass on the banks of the river tone. The winter months are spent housed in large, airy buildings, kept warm and comfortable in our own straw. They are fed on nutritious maize grown on the farm, topped up with our own barley and stock feed potatoes.
Our pork is free range and reared by James Mitchell on the farm. The sows spend all year in the field happily rooting up earth and sleeping in arcs on our own straw. The piglets are farrowed in the field and after weaning are reared in small groups on our own straw, where they are fed a home mixed ration of our own wheat and barley.
Delicious free range eggs are lovingly supplied by our happy hens, who roam under the apple trees while always having access to food, water and shelter in their houses. They also have a covered veranda area where they can scratch around in the soil should the weather be unsettled.
Three varieties are grown on the farm. We plant them in the spring and they are harvested in the autumn. They are then kept in our cold stores, graded into bags and delivered to the shop. Each have their own distinct characteristics:
- Maris Piper are floury and perfect for chipping and roasting.
- Marfona have a waxy texture and are ideal for baking, boiling, chipping and mashing. A great all-rounder.
- Wilja have a light-yellow flesh. They are floury with a slightly dry texture and are suitable for mashing, boiling, chipping and roasting.
We grow wheat barley and maize and all the cattle, pigs and hens are fed on a mixture of the corn grown on our farm with vitamins and nutrients.
